England have posted 355/7 in 50 overs against Sri Lanka in the third and deciding ODI at The Oval, putting a sizeable target on the board in the series finale.

Tom Banton led England's batting effort with a superb 126, while Harry Brook added 77 as the hosts recovered from an early setback and built momentum through the middle overs.

Sri Lanka now need 356 runs to win the match and take the three-match series.

Banton anchors England's big total

England lost Ben Duckett early after he was bowled by Dilshan Madushanka for a duck, but the early wicket did little to slow down the home side.

Banton settled in and built the innings around a number of important partnerships before eventually reaching his century. His 126 gave England the platform they needed to attack in the final stages of the innings.

Harry Brook also played an important role, scoring 77, as England moved from a difficult start to a position where a total above 350 became possible.

The pair's contribution was particularly important after England entered the decider without Jos Buttler, who was ruled out with a hamstring injury.

England finish strongly

After Banton and Brook departed, England continued to find runs through the lower and middle order.

Jordan Cox provided the late push, helping England accelerate towards the end of the innings. England eventually finished on 355/7, their highest score of the series so far.

Sri Lanka's bowlers were unable to contain the scoring rate during the final part of the innings, leaving their batters with a demanding chase.

Sri Lanka face 356-run target

Sri Lanka now have to score 356 to win the third ODI and claim the series.

The visitors levelled the series in the second ODI at Headingley after Kusal Mendis' 121 helped them score 321/6. Sri Lanka then restricted England to 305/9 to win by 16 runs.

England are playing the decider without Buttler, while Sri Lanka have retained the XI that won the second ODI.

Series decider at The Oval

England won the opening ODI by 89 runs before Sri Lanka hit back in Leeds. The third match therefore decides the series, with both sides having one win apiece.

England's 355/7 gives Sri Lanka a significant chase, but the visitors have already shown in this series that they can score heavily in the 50-over format.

The chase will also provide another opportunity for Sri Lanka's top order, including Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka, to produce a match-winning performance.
