According to reports, star fast bowler Mohammed Shami will enter the Team India ODI squad for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand. As per the latest update, discussions are going on over Shami’s return.

Mohammed Shami Might Play Upcoming ODI Series against New Zealand

Interim chief selector Pragyan Ojha is reportedly considering his comeback for the upcoming one-day series against BlackCaps. Shami played his last ODI on March 9, 2025, against New Zealand during the ICC Champions Trophy. In this tournament, he secured 9 wickets in 5 outings, and he was the leading wicket-taker of the ICC ODI World Cup 2023. He delivered his best bowling spell of 7/57 in the semifinal against New Zealand. Team India will face New Zealand in the upcoming ODI series from November 4 to November 15.

Despite taking 67 wickets for his state in domestic cricket, he has been continuously sidelined by the former chief selector Ajit Agarkar and Team management. Agarkar’s tenure as selector ended on October 4. Recently, on September 29, the Board of Control for Cricket in India(BCCI) appointed former Indian spinner Pragyan Ojha as interim chief selector. After Ojha was appointed selector, Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s comeback in T20 and now the discussion on Shami’s comeback created a hot topic among fans and cricket experts.

Indian Fast Bowling Needs Experience

Recently, there seems to be a lack of Indian fast bowlers for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup Preparation. India conceded 400-plus runs in the second ODI and failed to defend 351 in the third encounter. If the 36-year-old fast bowler is selected, it will surely strengthen Team India’s bowling unit.
