India captain Shreyas Iyer has explained why young batting superstar Vaibhav Suryavanshi has not received regular opportunities in the Indian playing XI. Despite his impressive performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League (IPL), the teenager has had to wait for his chance at the international level.

According to the latest update, Iyer said India currently has two established opening batters in Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson. The team management wants to continue backing the experienced pair because of their performances in major tournaments. Vaibhav made his international debut for India in July 2026. He is the youngest player to play for India.

Why Is Vaibhav Suryavanshi Waiting for His Chance?

Iyer explained that team selection depends on the combination needed for a particular match. India already has two strong opening options, making it difficult to include another opener without changing the batting order.

The Indian captain also showed the importance of patience. He believes Suryavanshi has the talent to succeed at the international level, but the youngster must continue working hard and wait for the right opportunity.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi's Impressive IPL 2026 Performance

Suryavanshi gained more attention with his performances for Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026. The left-handed batter scored 776 runs in 16 matches, establishing himself as one of the tournament's best performers. His performances also helped him earn recognition through major individual awards.

His aggressive batting and ability to score quickly made him a promising option for India's T20I team. He was selected for the first time in the Team India squad for the Ireland series in June this year.

However, getting a place in the team does not confirm selection in every match. The team management must consider the form of existing players, batting combinations and the balance of the playing XI.

Suryavanshi's situation shows the competition for places in India's T20I team. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have established themselves as opening options, leaving the youngster waiting for regular opportunities. Both have been playing really well.

For Suryavanshi, the immediate challenge is to maintain his form and remain prepared whenever the team needs him. Consistent performances in domestic cricket and franchise tournaments could strengthen his case for selection.

Iyer's comments suggest that India recognise the youngster's skills but do not want to disrupt their established opening combination without a clear reason.

At just 15, Suryavanshi has already impressed with good performances. For now, patience, preparation and consistent performances will be key as he waits for more opportunities in international cricket.
