The fifty-over record is usually the deepest thing two international sides share. The format goes back to January 1971, when a washed-out Melbourne Test between Australia and England was replaced by a forty-over exhibition that ended up being recognised as the first ODI, and it has been cricket's main global currency since the first World Cup in 1975. Matches were not standardised at fifty overs a side until 1983, so the earliest games here were played over 55 or 60, under field restrictions and bouncer limits that would look alien today. Scores from different eras simply do not compare: a total that won a match comfortably in the 1980s would rarely be defended now.
Two rule changes explain most of that gap. Since October 2011 each innings has been bowled with two new balls, one from each end, which keeps the ball hard for longer and has all but killed reverse swing at the death. Since 2015 only four fielders have been allowed outside the circle in non-powerplay overs, and the batting powerplay went altogether. Between them they turned 300 from a par-plus score into a routine one. Where the matches were played is worth a look too - home advantage counts for a great deal in this format. Rain-hit games are decided on DLS once twenty overs of the second innings have been bowled, and a tie brings a Super Over at ICC events.
