During a recent press conference before the India-New Zealand ODI series, India captain Shubman Gill dropped an update. Gill said he hopes he will come back soon. He will play some domestic cricket, and we will get him back in the Indian Team soon.
Hardik Pandya played his last ODI versus New Zealand in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Dubai. Hardik scored 1,904 runs and took 91 wickets in ODI cricket for India. He made his ODI debut against the Black Caps on October 16, 2016, at Dharamsala under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
His ability to contribute with both bat and ball gives India an additional option in the playing XI. He can bat in the middle order, accelerate the scoring rate during the final overs and provide valuable bowling support.
Hardik's presence also gives the team good flexibility when selecting its combination. His all-round skills allow India to maintain a balance between specialist batters and bowlers. This makes his availability particularly important for major ODI tournaments.
Before returning to international cricket, Hardik is expected to get match practice through domestic cricket. These matches will provide an opportunity to regain his rhythm with both bat and ball.
India will be looking to improve its ODI combination ahead of upcoming international assignments. Hardik's return could provide another experienced all-rounder to the squad.
Meanwhile, Team India is currently focused on its preparations for the upcoming five-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting on November 4, 2026. The team management will look to test different player combinations and build a strong middle order ahead of future international tournaments. Shubman Gill will lead the side, while experienced players will be expected to take responsibility in key situations. Hardik Pandya's return in future could further strengthen India's balance in the ODI format.
