A handful of meetings, almost all of them at World Cups - and one produced what is widely held to be the greatest innings in one-day cricket. Wankhede Stadium, 7 November 2023: Afghanistan 291 for 5, Australia 91 for 7. Glenn Maxwell, cramping so badly he could barely run and batting almost entirely from the crease, made 201 not out and finished it with a six, sharing an unbroken stand of 202 with Pat Cummins, who contributed 12.
Australia have won every completed match between the two. Their 417 for 6 at Perth in the 2015 World Cup - a 275-run win - is the biggest total the rivalry has thrown up and one of the largest in World Cup history.
The most recent meeting, at Lahore in the 2025 Champions Trophy, was abandoned with Afghanistan on 273 and Australia 109 for 1.
