India vs Pakistan Head to Head in Test Cricket
India and Pakistan have faced each other in 59 Test matches, the first in 1952 and the last on 8 December 2007. Pakistan have won 12 and India 9, and 38 of the meetings were drawn - by some distance the highest draw share of any long-running Test rivalry. The highest innings total India have made against Pakistan is 675, against Pakistan's best of 699. The lowest completed innings are 106 and 116 respectively. India batters have scored 51 centuries here, Pakistan batters 65. The table above has every meeting, venue and margin. Updated 22 August, 2026.
The series opened in Delhi on 16 October 1952 - Pakistan's first Test tour of any country, a year after they were admitted. India won it by an innings and 70 runs. Pakistan levelled at Lucknow in the next match, where Fazal Mahmood took 12 wickets on matting and India were dismissed for 106, still their lowest completed innings against Pakistan. Five Tests, two results, three draws: the pattern of the whole rivalry was set in that first month.
It is the draw column that defines this fixture. Cricket between the two stopped altogether from 1961 to 1978 and again through most of the 1990s, and when it resumed the cricket was often attritional - flat pitches, two sides with far more to lose than to gain. The 1980s produced 22 Tests and five results, including a run of 17 draws.
Pakistan's finest hour came at the end of that decade. Bangalore, March 1987: bowled out for 116 on a turning pitch and they still won by 16 runs, Iqbal Qasim and Tauseef Ahmed sharing 18 wickets between them, Sunil Gavaskar falling for 96 in what turned out to be his last Test innings. It gave Pakistan their first Test win in India since 1952 and their first series there.
The last decade of the fixture was its most generous. India's 2004 tour opened at Multan with Virender Sehwag's 309, the first triple hundred by an Indian, in a total of 675 for 5 declared and a win by an innings and 52 runs. Pakistan had their own monuments - 699 for 5 declared at Lahore in 1989, and a 341-run win at Karachi in 2006 in the highest-scoring series the two have played. Pakistan toured India one last time in late 2007, drawing at Kolkata and Bengaluru after losing at Delhi. The two countries have not played a Test since 8 December 2007.
