According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav is most likely to captain Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy 2026.

Under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, Team India recently won the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 in India. Suryakumar has never lost a T20 series as captain for India. He won the Asia Cup 2025 as captain as well. The former India captain has played 113 T20S with 3,272 runs for India. He achieved the number 1 T20 batter ranking on October 30, 2022.

He has been a great player for India in T20. The Mumbai batter played his last International match on March 9, 2026, vs New Zealand in the T20 World Cup Final. As of now, he is not part of Team India.

Mumbai will start their Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2026-27 campaign against Hyderabad on November 14 in Kolkata. The team has been placed in Elite Group D, alongside Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Odisha, Uttarakhand and Vidarbha. Suryakumar's experience in T20 cricket could be important for Mumbai as they prepare for the upcoming domestic league.

The Mumbai Cricket Association is reportedly considering Suryakumar for the captaincy because several other leadership options are unavailable. Shreyas Iyer is expected to be engaged with international commitments, while Yashasvi Jaiswal is currently with the Indian Test team in New Zealand. Meanwhile, Shardul Thakur and Ayush Mhatre are dealing with injuries.

The upcoming domestic tournaments will also give Suryakumar a chance to improve his batting form and return to the Indian team. He scored 242 runs in nine matches during the 2026 T20 World Cup at an average of 30.25. A good performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy could strengthen his chances of making an international comeback.
